What to expect at New Year´s in Rio

New Year´s in Rio is second only to Carnaval, and that´s saying a lot! People of all ages, nationalities, and walks of life come together from around the world and right here in Brazil, to bid a festive goodbye to the year and usher in the new.

The festivities centre around Copacabana from the early evening and entertainment is plentiful, abundant and diverse: stages are lined up along the world-renowned beach strip playing live music of all genres – shows are performed by popular Brazilian musicians, including rock, pop and dance just to name a few. All the Samba dance schools parade, providing a taster for what is just the tip of the Carnaval iceberg.

A giant Ferris wheel parked at the Fort of Copacabana, at the southern tip of the beach, hosts the countdown with digital effects and images of Rio. From boats anchored at sea, a huge fireworks display erupts into the hot summer-night sky for a dazzling 20-minute show of light and colour, heralding the turn of the New Year, and a guaranteed party all night long.

Up to 3 million can come together at the Copacabana New Year´s festivities – from families to the die-hard partiers, from socialites and the rich and famous to the working class, from young children to seniors.

This is truly the party for everyone, all following the New Year´s traditions in good spirits to ensure good luck for the oncoming year. Everyone dresses in the colour white for good luck and those who want to mix it up will add accessories in other colours: green for good health, red to attract romance, yellow for prosperity, and so on. People will always throw flowers into the sea before midnight, their offering to the deity of the seas, Yamanja. It is also tradition to bring a bottle of champagne down to the beach to be popped at midnight, which often will be sprayed around.

Afterwards, clubs and venues are open all night, or simply opting to stay at the beach until the first sunrise of the year is always a favourite.
